Review: Daylighters, #15, Morganville Vampires FINALE novel - by Rachel Caine

The Morganville Vampires
Book #15, Finale book in the series
Rachel Caine

While Morganville, Texas, is often a troubled town, Claire Danvers and her friends are looking forward to coming home. But the Morganville they return to isn’t the one they know; it’s become a different place—a deadly one…
Something drastic has happened in Morganville while Claire and her friends were away. The town looks cleaner and happier than they’ve ever seen it before, but when their incoming group is arrested and separated—vampires from humans—they realize that the changes definitely aren’t for the better.

It seems that an organization called the Daylight Foundation has offered the population of Morganville something they’ve never had: hope of a vampire-free future. And while it sounds like salvation—even for the vampires themselves—the truth is far more sinister and deadly.

Now, Claire, Shane and Eve need to find a way to break their friends out of Daylighter custody, before the vampires of Morganville meet their untimely end…

As a huge fan of this series, I'm super sad to see it end - but it was defintely time - and Rachel did it perfectly. She closed it out in a way that each character had an end without it feeling like The End. (If that makes sense) She didn't have to go through the list of characters and give all the details of their future, you are just content with how it ends and aren't curious as to how so and so turns out.

As a whole, the story was good - plenty of action, drama, and sarcasm as always.

There were some parts that didn't quite keep my interest and I'd find myself spacing out and thinking of other things while still holding the book. The whole point of reading is to escape from the world and our problems for a little while. Despite the few mind wandering moments I did enjoy the book; it seems the story has come full circle.

In the beginning, the humans are terrified of the vampires and subsequently are their prisoners; by book #15, Daylighters, the vampires are now terrified of the humans and are imprisoned with shock collars. At least in the beginning. It seems everyone's roles have reversed at some point or another throughout the series, but in the end they are all trying to live peacefully... or as peacefully as humans and vampires can.

I mean, they are predator and prey after all.

Author Information

I was born and raised in the Baltimore Metropolitan area but my family is originally from Rhode Island. I spent summers in New
England with my grandparents, which probably sparked my fascination with Salem, MA. I started writing fictional stories and poems in middle school. In fact I had notebooks and notebooks full of incomplete stories and poems. One of which I managed to hold on to and is safely stashed in a box under my bed. When I was in seventh grade I entered a poetry contest in the back of an Archie comic and won, after that I was hooked on writing after that. Amazingly it took almost two decades to find a voice for my snarky, ass kicking heroine Maurin Kincaide and complete my first length novel. Meeting the love of your life and raising three amazing children together must have caused a rift in time because I still can't believe it's gone by so quickly. I'm fortunate to have an loving and supportive family who don't mind sharing me with all the other people in my head.

Review: the Fiery Heart (#4 Bloodlines) by Richelle Mead

The Fiery Heart
Bloodlines #4
Richelle Mead
Paranormal, YA

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure — and re-education — looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this smoldering fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

As the fourth book in a spin off series I knew it wouldn't be quite as good as it's predecessors, but I wasn't expecting what I read!
Okay, before you decide to move this book down on your TBR list - I did enjoyed the book, but the first half was SO extremely slow! It was basically the day to day life and struggles of the group at Amberwood.
It wasn't until about the halfway mark that things finally picked up; which is great, because I was beginning to lose faith in the storyline.
The third book, Indigo Spell, had a sense of urgency to it. The pace was fast and there was a lot going on to keep you interested; this book seems to take the urgency out of those problems, and instead focuses more on all the romantic problems the group is having. Fiery Heart's primary characters are Adrian and Sydney with the rest seeming to get pushed to the background with a few mentions here and there.
Honestly, this would be a great book if you could transform the first half of the book into a summery and then read the second half. It ends with a hell of a cliff hanger that will surely have you begging for the next book, Silver Shadows. (being released in late July)

After it became apparent she wouldn't fit the role of a proper 1900's lady, her father, Sherlock, called in some lingering favors, and landed her a position at the Mutter Museum. Henry Watson arrives at the Mutter Museum with a double assignment--to become a finder of abnormal antiquities and to watch over and keep Arabella Holmes. An easy task, if he could only get her to speak to him instead of throwing knives in his general direction.

But this is no time for child's play. The two teens are assigned to a most secret exploration, when the hand of a Nephilim is unearthed in upstate New York. Soon, Arabella and Henry are caught in a fight for their lives as scientific debate swirls around them. Are the bones from a Neanderthal ... or are they living proof of fallen angels, who supposedly mated with humans according to ancient scrolls?

Sent to recover the skeleton, they discover they are the second team to have been deployed and the entire first team is dead. And now they must trust their instincts and rely on one another in order to survive and uncover the truth.

Giveaway: Pretty Reckless by Jodi Linton

 Pretty Reckless
by: Jodi Linton

 Genre: Contemporary Romance
ISBN-13: 9781622665143
Publisher: Entangled Publishing, LLC
Publication date: 3/24/2014
Format: eBook
Pages: 245

Book Description:

Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.
Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless, but she’s turned herself around—she’s respectably engaged and she’s become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything’s fine until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town’s first murder case.

Laney will be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf and her chance at a quiet, contented life. His seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido was only outdone by her constant urge to butt heads with him. But when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand—and a truce in exchange for his help.

Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but Laney has always been pretty reckless…

The station was bustling with commotion when I opened the door. Two men in black suits with Texas Ranger badges were sitting on top of my desk. I scanned the tiny room for Elroy. He was hunkered down in a corner in his black rolling chair with an overload of treats—a Butterfinger, a half empty bottle of Dr Pepper, and a Big Grab of Cheetos sat in his lap. Our visitors were apparently getting to him.
I strolled on over to my desk and leaned over the top of it. “If you don’t mind guys, this here is my desk.”
The older gentlemen tipped his ten-gallon hat and stood up. “Sorry about that, miss.”
The younger one dropped his chin, and he winked suggestively at me.
I took a deep, calming breath, walked up behind him, and shoved him off my desk. He looked at me, shocked.
“Don’t ever make me ask twice,” I said.
A firm hand fell at the small of my back and rubbed up my shirt. I shot around, staring straight into Gunner’s smiling eyes.
“I’d do what the lady asked. Sometimes she scares the shit out of me.”
The young Ranger nodded and moved aside, all the while keeping a wary eye on me.
I turned my back on him. “Saw you outside my house last night,” I told Gunner.
“Just doing my job.” Gunner winked and sat down on the edge of my desk.
“Spying on me isn’t—” I began, but the older, button-nosed Ranger wearing the Stetson moved into my view, arresting my attention. He was round at the waist, and his hair had seen better days, back when he had some. There was also a jelly stain on his left boob that I couldn’t stop starring at.
Nodding, Gunner tapped the outer edge of my desk in a goodbye or see you later, then followed the button-nosed man toward the back by the cell. Not only did I have to bite my tongue and play nice with Gunner Wilson in town, I was also being asked to let the Texas Ranger have free range of the station. I was a broken heel away from a nervous breakdown.
A little too quickly, Gunner reappeared at my desk, waving a piece of paper at me. “Want in on this, Laney?”
I snatched the paper from him. “What is it?”
“Bosley’s financial records. Take a look.”
“How did you get this?”
“Just came over the fax.”
“We have a fax?”
He grinned and winked. “Big boys are in town. You do now.”
