Review: Silver Shadows, Bloodlines #5, Richelle Mead

Silver Shadows
Bloodlines Series
book 5
Richelle Mead

Paranormal Romance
Published: July 29, 2014

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

Review:

Silver Shadows definitely brought back the action. No longer did I find myself lost in thought while reading, this book was a page turner.

This book read more like the original Vampire Academy series, packed with action and an actual romance. Their relationship no longer felt uneasy and childish as it did in the previous books- it was all love and finally being comfortable with it once they found each other again. I guess being held captive will put things into perspective for you..

There were a few side stories developing in the background and I see either another spin off series or a larger portion of the future books being dedicated to these characters. (Marcus and his group of runaway alchemists, specifically Duncan and his gf)

I was a little disappointed in the wedding.. I mean, it's a monumental life changing event and it seemed to hold no importance, it's almost as though it was thrown in as an after thought. Adrian went through all the trouble to make it as perfect as it could be under the circumstances, but of the entire book the wedding details took up all of a couple pages. I just think it should have been a more prominent part of the story; this is where she should have paused and added the extra details - how the two felt while it was happening despite the trouble they were in, let them say I Do.. It could have been SO much better.

Other then that one complaint, I loved it! Silver Shadows was definitely one of the better books in this spin off so far! I'm excited for another book, especially after the hell of a cliff hanger we are left with!

Review: City of Heavenly Fire, Mortal Instruments #6

City of Heavenly Fire
The Mortal Instruments
book 6, The End
Cassandra Clare

YA Paranormal, Fantasy

In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris - but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee - even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned...

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

Review:

City of Heavenly Fire was long... much longer than the other books in the series. It was really slow in parts and I found myself wandering in thought instead of paying attention to the words. Finally it picks up the pace and for once they are all fighting together to save someone else instead of trying to rescue each other.

I feel like a good portion of this book is a set up for a spin off series (which I do not plan on reading) I could have done without all the side story with the orphaned children, and in turn that would have shortened the book. However, I'm glad that everyone got their happily ever after and it seemed like the perfect time to end the series. Anymore and it would have been repetitive, I mean, how many different ways can a group of teenagers save the world?

Poor Simon seemed to get the worst of it from beginning to end.. turned into a rat, a vampire, a daylighter, stripped of immortality and memories to be returned to mundane life... only to be turned into a possible shadowhunter. Really? I still don't get the appeal for Magnus, why a 400 year old warlock would love an 18 year old is beyond me. Jace finally figuring out and accepting who he is and basically asking Clary to marry him, and Maya finally happy and in charge.

What I don't understand is the conversation between Zachariah and Tessa that suggests a repeating pattern with the families, but my guess is that it's another of the storylines that will be followed in the possible spinoff series. Who knows.

Good series, glad it's over.

4 stars.

Review: City of Lost Souls, Mortal Instruments #5

City of Lost Souls
 The Mortal Instruments
book 5
Cassandra Clare

Young adult Paranormal, Fantasy

The New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments continues—and so do the thrills and danger for Jace, Clary, and Simon.

What price is too high to pay, even for love? When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

 Review:

City of Lost Souls was much better than City of Fallen Angels, the action is definitely back!
It started off a little slow and I was gearing up for more disappointment, but a few chapters in and the pace picked up.

As I mentioned in my review of CoFA, there were more story lines to follow in this book, so it wasn't just Clary crying over Jace... (there seems to be a pattern in these books, one always needs saving; why can't they save someone else together?!)

Anyway, we follow the strange love story of Alec and Magnus. (Alec comes off as such a baby to me. Yeah, your boyfriend is 800 years old, I'm sure he's had a few partners... get over it. It's really annoying) The typical teenage relationships between Simon and Izzy, and Jordan and Maya. (how sad is it that the closest thing to typical teenagers in this series is a daylighter vamp with a shadowhunter, and the tragic love story of two orphaned wolfs?!)There is the hint of the Lightwood parents relationship throughout the book, and of course Clary's mom and Luke.
And then there is the strange relationship between Clary, Jace, and Sebastian. At one point you almost feel bad for the guy, but then just can't - and you want to yell at Clary for being stupid, really stupid.

I do like that Clary hasn't just forgive her mother, and everything is back to normal. She stands up for herself, and I think Isabelle stands up to Clary's mom because she can't bring herself to stand up to her own parents yet.

There were some slow parts, and a few small parts that should have been taken out in editing... they were pointless to the story because nothing came from it. It's as if it was a possible idea that was forgotten and never explored. Other parts were built up to be something so important, and then were over in a few sentences like it was nothing.. no big deal.

With that said, overall it was a good read. I'd give it 3.5 - 4 stars.

F.M. Sherrill:

Aren't author's bios boring? I always wanted to read one that went something like this:

F.M. Sherrill: recent citizen of earth. Plans on ruling the planet once she gets over the common cold. Or, F.M. Sherrill: time traveler. Decided to alter the space-time continuum by writing a novel, thus changing history slightly, which will eventually lead to the rise of a new human species.

But here it is. F.M. Sherrill is a novelist, A.K.A. an avid bullshitter; that's why she lives in L.A.. She's been writing for as long as her ancient mind can remember, devouring tales like an anemic vampire roaming the streets in hot pink heels, always thirsty for more. When she's not writing, she's making steampunk weapons, sewing giant plant-eater Mario plushes, making costumes for some film bloke or cosplayer, and sculpting/casting movie prop replicas while gardening in her urban apartment. Her favorite tools? A soldering iron, a blowtorch, a band saw, a sonic screwdriver, a replicator and an active imagination.

Even Jace.

The stakes are higher than ever in the #1 New York Times bestselling fourth installment of the Mortal Instruments series.

Review:

I'd have to give this a 3.5 star.

This book definitely has the feel of pushing a series further than the original storyline.
It was good, it just didn't flow as smoothly as the previous 3 books.

What didn't help is that I've been listening to the series on Audible.com and for whatever reason they changed the narrators on this book and they were horrible! The guy sounds like a 30 year old British man for Simon and a knock off Sylvester Stallone for Jace! The woman sounded like a whiny 12 year old that is trying way to hard to enunciate each word for Clary. It was really quite ridiculous.

Back to the book though, There was a lot going on in this one. There are several different story lines beginning to form with each of the characters and I expect the rest of the series to be very busy. City of Fallen Angels was more of an emotional downer. Everyone seems to be heart broken and self punishing. Jace was super annoying in this one for me; I mean, you didn't learn in the first 3 books that if there is something wrong you should say something instead of trying stay away from Clary to protect her... sigh. This book was extremely frustrating at times and I had to walk away for a while; far from the previous books where I had to make myself turn it off for bed. There are a few action sequences, mostly drama, and a few scenes that seem pointless - perhaps they'll make more sense in a future book.

Overall it was an okay read. I'm sure it would have been much better had I not been picturing Sylvester Stallone reading the book into a microphone. lol
