Review: Lucifer's Rogue (The Draculia Vampire Series) by Colleen Gleason

 Lucifer's Rogue
The Draculia Vampire Series
book 1
Colleen Gleason

Regency Paranormal Romance

The men and women of the Vampire Dracule are tied to Lucifer for eternity. In exchange, the Dracule are given immortality and power…and a guilt-free life of pleasure, wealth, and freedom.

No one can touch them.

No man can control them.
No mortal can destroy them…unless they find love.

But Lucifer will not release those who are bound to him without a fight.

In a battle of good versus evil, love versus hate, only the strongest souls can win freedom from the devil.

Even after centuries of lust, hedonism, and women, Voss rarely finds himself bored. As a member of the Dracule, he is a rogue of the first order, a man who loves nothing more than a warm woman, excellent vintage, and even a puzzling challenge to keep his mind active.

But when one of his seemingly harmless manipulations sets him on the path to seduce the beautiful Angelica Woodmore, things become a little less simple…a lot more passionate…and definitely more complicated.

And when the most evil vampire of the Dracule puts Angelica in his sights, Voss will have to risk everything to save her…and possibly his own soul.

Review:

It's no secret that Colleen Gleason is my favorite author. In fact, the Gardella Vampire Chronicles is by far my favorite book series. So it's no surprise that I loved Lucifer's Rogue as well!

Voss reminds me quite a bit of Sebastian, and since he was my favorite character in GVC, of course I fancy Voss. He's charming, attractive, and quite selfish. He's smitten with Angelica, but that doesn't change his personality like many romance stories go... no, he continues to do what he wants, use her for information to keep himself a step ahead of the rest, as well as playing pranks on poor grumpy Dimitri. He does try his best to keep her safe, even from himself.

Angelica has a few surprises of her own. A strong minded woman in that time period was a rare thing, and I enjoyed reading from her perspective.

I love the twist on Vampire lore; each having a special affliction. It adds a dimension to the storyline that other paranormal plots lack.

Colleen's writing is the only regency period books that I've ever enjoyed, and the fact that they are my favorites says a lot. She just has a way with words. Another thing I love about her writing style is the way she seamlessly switches between character pov's. There are many books that have frustrated me, some I couldn't even finish, because it's hard to follow or just flat out annoying to read from an unimportant character's pov. But Colleen's transitions are perfect and when it switches you aren't confused about who it is, or where the story picks up.

I'm excited to start the second book in the series.

Review

New Cover Art 2014
Perfect ending to an amazing series!

When some series come to an end it feels forced, like the author is trying to give everyone a fitting farewell and story lines don't seem to match up. This is not one of those times. Colleen has expertly ended the series with each character getting their respected goodbye.

As Shadows Fade is another action packed page turner. Vampires, Demons and the dreaded love triangle.
Victoria has finally come to the realization that she is in love with the tall brooding Max, and is determined to make him hers, whether he wants to be or not! Max wants Victoria, but he doesn't feel worthy of her as mere mortal man and is steadily pushing her toward the extremely handsome Venator, Sebastian. Sebastian is indeed in love with Victoria and refuses to be a gentleman about her choice, he is willing to do anything to get her!

Mix in some serious demonic threats, the always evil Queen of the Vampires, Lilith, and some other surprises along the way - and you've got probably the best book in the series!

The ending will ultimately appeal to both happily ever after lovers and those that prefer things to go awry. This book has it all. Suspense, mystery, romance, hope, sadness, love, surprise, etc.

When Twilight Burns
The Gardella Vampire Chronicles
book 4
Colleen Gleason

Historical Paranormal Romance

Original Cover Art
After narrowly escaping from Rome, she returns to London, where not even sunrise can stop a vampire’s carnage…

Ruining Victoria’s homecoming, a vampire stalks the streets of London – during the daylight. Not only is Victoria unable to detect the vampire with her heightened senses, but she’s being framed as the prime suspect behind the killings.

Meanwhile, her heart is still divided between the enigmatic Sebastian Vioget and her fellow slayer Max Pesaro. The battle is made even more difficult by the legacy of a vampire’s touch – a vampire who left in Victoria’s veins boiling blood that forces her to fight evil on two fronts: against the new breed of undead threatening London, and against the darkness within herself.

Review

With each book comes a new evil. In this case the greatest evil has come back for more.

Victoria once again finds herself facing off against Lilith, the Vampire Queen. This time however, it's personal.

With Beauregard's blood still coursing through her veins, Victoria finds herself full of rage and seeing red, literally. Not only is she fighting the change, the return of George Starcasset along with Sara Regalado, and worrying with the appearance of the new Marquess of Rockely, but there are now daytime vampires roaming London and a Bow Street Runner determined to pin the mysterious deaths on her!

As if all of that wasn't enough, Victoria is coming to terms with how her future effects the future of the Venators - and dealing with matters of the heart. Sebastian continues to be smitten with Victoria, and now that his loyalties are no longer torn between his vampire grandfather and his calling for duty, he's a constant companion.
Max finds himself back in London, he's no longer a Venator and no longer feels the thrall of Lilith, but he can't seem to stay away from Victoria, as much as he tries to deny it.

This is probably the most action packed book in the series so far, and with lots of plot twists and surprises to keep you on your toes! Definitely a page turner!

Review:

The Bleeding Dusk, book 3, starts off with Max seeking out none other than the evil queen herself, Lilith. She offers him a choice, remain under her thrall, or remove her marks forever, taking with them his Venator powers and all his memories of the paranormal world. He would be a mere mortal free to live out the rest of his life in ignorance.

What choice will he make, and how will it effect the rest of the Venators after recently loosing their leader?

Victoria, still struggling with the loss of her aunt, is also learning how to be Illa Gardella, leader of the Venators. She is the youngest of the bunch, but her blood calls her to the top. To make matters worse, she once again has to juggle her duel lifestyle when she is surprised with a visit from her mother and friends. How will she keep her family safe from the vampires?

Add to all the stress she's already feeling with her passionate, yet confusing feelings for Sebastian. He's been leading his own duel life, balancing his loyalties between Victoria and his vampire grandfather, Beauregard. He will eventually have to make a choice... which side will he choose?

This book is an absolute page turner. It will keep you up into the early morning hours. This is not my first time reading the series and I was still pulled into the plot and struck by the brilliance that is Colleen Gleason's writing!

Two stubborn people—a witch and a mage—come together with a fierceness borne of desperation. Can passion trump their intense need for independence? Will they live long enough to find out?

Book Description:

Roz, Jenna, and Colleen are the last of the demon-stalking witches. So far, they’ve escaped disaster, but their luck is running low. When demons strike in the midst of Colleen’s wedding, Roz launches desperate measures because she and her sister witches are Earth’s only hedge against being overrun by Hell’s minions. As she shape-shifts to keep one step ahead of the demons, at least it takes her mind off her other problems. Personal ones. She burned through a couple of marriages with a string of loser men before, after, and in between. Though she wants to be happy for Colleen, the jealousy bug bit deep and hasn’t let go.

In Roz’s secret heart she’s attracted to Ronin, one of the Daoine Sidhe. He’s so profanely beautiful she can barely breathe around him, but he’s also headstrong and arrogant. Not good partner material, she tells herself, unless she wants to end up dusting her heart off one more time.

Ronin set his sights on Roz when she was at his home in the U.K. for a strategy meeting and he can’t get her out of his mind. Unfortunately, she’s so prickly getting close to her requires scheming. He casts an enchantment to lure her at Colleen’s wedding, but she senses the spell and rebuffs him.

Roz is used to calling the shots. So is Ronin. Sparks fly. Tempers run hot, right along with an attraction too strong to be denied. Roz and Ronin come together with a fierceness borne of desperation, but demons are determined to rid themselves of the witches for good, no matter what it takes.

 About the Author:

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains.

It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.

Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.

In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.

Review:

Rises the Night, the second book in the Gardella Vampire Chronicles is just as good, if not better than the first, The Rest Falls Away.

This book starts off with an emotional and angry Victoria, fresh from the loss of her husband prowling the streets of London in search of something to kill. When she does just that, and realizes it was blood on her hands and not ash, she takes out her Vis Bulla and spends a year grieving and learning the cope with the rage and loss inside her.

A year later, shes back on the streets, but after the destruction of the book, Lilith has retreated to her mountain hide away and taken all of the vampires with her. Max went back to Italy, and Sebastian is still missing. What's a girl to do?

Return to society of course.

Victoria comes out of mourning and accepts an invitation from the Starcasset siblings to visit their estate in the country. If she can't kill vampires she might as well live it up during the day... right?

This series is packed with action and emotion, some romance, and a few surprises along the way.
It is a definite page turner and one you'll want to read again!

Victoria has finally grown up some in this book. She is no longer the immature young girl she'd been in book one; she understands the severity of her duty, her calling to serve the greater good, even if that means giving up the life she wanted. She's determined and much stronger.

The men in this book are just as tempting as they had been in the first, adding a few more to the mix when she attracts the eye of some handsome Italian men in Rome. Sebastian is even more appealing, and Max of course is just as hard and controlled.

I love this series and think everyone should read it at least once!
