Excerpt from The Boss

I couldn’t believe I was doing this. I couldn’t believe it was actually happening, after six years. After I had given up hope of ever having a sexual experience as satisfying as my night with Leif. Every muscle in my body tensed with anticipation. My breath caught in my chest as my fingers ventured down, under the black lace of my panties. I thought back to my white cotton underpants that night at the Crowne Plaza, and I giggled to myself. If anyone had told me back then that I’d be sex ambushing the man six years later, I wouldn’t have believed I would have the nerve.
I closed my eyes and stroked two fingers down my slit. My hips lifted. I’d been so eager for this moment, now it seemed like my skin was too sensitive to touch. I thought of what Neil would see when he walked in, and remembered the undisguised appreciation in his eyes while he’d watched our hands on my body.
My stomach fluttered with nervous butterflies. What if he was expecting the girl from six years ago, who’d only had sex with fumbling teenage boys? What if he got here and was turned off by my initiative? After all, he’d found my naivetĂ© so endearing the last time we were together.
Oh shut up, I scolded myself. Would you really want to fuck a guy who only wanted you for your sexual inexperience? No, because that would be weird.
I’d made a salient point, I had to concede.
My fingertips circled my clit, and a shaky breath stuttered across my lips. My flesh felt hot and heavy under my hand, and I cupped myself, letting my fingers slip between the folds of my sex.
The door clicked open, and the weight of my desire became like an electric current. My lungs seized, my limbs quivered. I opened my eyes, a soft groan escaping me when I saw Neil there. He closed the door and dropped his messenger bag. His gaze met mine and held it as he walked toward me in his long black coat and leather gloves. I don’t know how I managed to maintain eye contact, but I did, and I had never felt so sexy in my entire life. Why had I ever doubted that this would please him?
His maddeningly neutral expression gave nothing away, but he couldn’t disguise the hunger in his eyes. Oh, he wanted me. He stood over me, looking down as I continued to move my hand beneath my panties.
“Take those off.” His voice was soft and deep, the tone firm. I was being commanded, not asked. A perverse thrill shot through me, and I shivered.
His eyes followed my hands as I slowly peeled the scrap of black lace down my thighs. He stepped closer and ran one gloved hand up my calf, raising goose bumps on my skin. I moaned at the cool touch of the leather, and he grasped my panties, jerking them down the rest of the way. I slipped my feet from them and watched him lift the lace to his nose.
“Oh god.” My exclamation tore out on a ragged breath, and I pressed my thighs together against the pounding ache in my cunt. I wanted him so badly I trembled, but I was afraid of what would happen when we actually touched. The longing, the desperate, clawing sexual need that had been missing from every encounter I’d had in the intervening six years crashed over me, turned my blood into liquid desire coursing to every throbbing cell in my body.
“Don’t stop,” he said, removing his gloves slowly, tugging one fingertip at a time. I spread my legs a little, and he ordered, “Wider.”
I heard my pulse in my ears as I parted my thighs further. Neil took off his coat and tossed it across the ottoman, on top of the gloves he’d already discarded. He moved to stand between my spread legs, looking down at me with his hands in his pockets. He was hard, his cock a visible ridge against his fly beneath his unbuttoned jacket.
I stroked myself, letting my fingers wander further, to dip inside before tracing upward again, coated in the evidence of my overwhelming desire. I smoothed the silky wetness over my clitoris, into the short, neatly trimmed strip of hair on my mound.
Wordlessly, Neil watched me rub my clit in slow circles. Being like this for him, my legs open, my pussy exposed and gleaming wet while he stood there fully dressed, turned the naughty factor up to eleven and then some. Just thinking about what I was doing spiked my arousal higher. I had done things with him that I’d never done with anyone else, and that knowledge made me feel oddly safe.
My thighs tensed, and I planted my black pumps firmly against the rug. My orgasm wound tight inside me, ready to spring and uncoil me from the inside out. A yelped, “Ah!” of frustration escaped me, and I lifted my hips from the sofa. I was going to come, I was so close, I was going to come while he watched me, without him ever touching me, and I was so goddamn close—
“Stop.”

Excerpt:

“Listen, I have a little tradition after my fights in town that I go to Dubicki’s after and see my family. I either celebrate or commiserate with the locals. Any chance you would want to go with me tonight?”
“Wow. Jesse, that’s really sweet, but, honestly, I’m still digesting what just happened. It might be a bit soon to meet your family.”
“Carissa, honestly, I decided the night that I met you that you would be mine. You can meet them now, or you can meet them later, but you will meet my family.”
She bit back her smile at his bravado. His announcement to her was a little shocking, but something in it connected to her. As long as he didn’t force himself on her, she would go with the flow of things. She wasn’t ready to leave him just yet, so she decided to go with him. She tried not to be nervous about meeting the family before they’d even had their first date. She kept telling herself it was crazy, or, at the very least, it all felt a little surreal. If it was a dream, she didn’t want to wake up.

What southern-grown, rock star Rick Chamberland doesn’t know about his family’s dark past comes to light when he returns home to Louisiana at the request of his mother. Meanwhile, Song Peters, a dutiful daughter taking care of a dying mother, dreams of the day she can break free of small town life and pursue her one true passion, singing. Rick meets Song and instantly sparks ignite.

They make beautiful music together and soon find that they share similar upbringings. Rick comes to learn that their families are supernaturally intertwined and that the one denominator (a demon by the name Nova) connected to both families threatens to destroy them all if they do not obey.

About the Author:

Caddell Brown, born and raised in East Texas, authors a range of speculative fiction. Among her early influences are artist Rene Magritte, film director Andrei Tarkovsky and author Dan Simmons.

Excerpt:

"In other entertainment news, after two months of rumor and speculation, international pop star Rick Chamberland filed suit against British gossip rag, PopStarPress, for libel. The suit is regarding his alleged involvement in the murder of twenty-one year old Chastity Wilson, an Oxford University student whose body was found in a downtown London hotel—the same hotel housed the singer, as well as his entire entourage, following one of Chamberland's concerts. Wilson was one of three fans who won an opportunity to meet the superstar backstage. Many have speculated that Wilson not only met Chamberland backstage, but accompanied him to his hotel after the show. Notorious for his party-boy image, Chamberland denied ever meeting privately with Wilson, although there is footage of them together backstage at a fan meet-and-greet. Early this morning, he was seen at Heathrow boarding a flight back to the United States after performing last night at a world AIDS benefit for her majesty, the Queen."
Rick woke from a nap, having drifted in and out of sleep as the jet soared into the air. The sounds of his team, management, and the jet’s crew once a faded rumble as he slept, now soared dramatically. He heard the deep bass voice of his manager Arnie from behind. The other members of his team: his stylist, Maddie, and her assistant, Jett, spoke in hushed tones. They were seated across from Rick and had maintained a quieter voice unlike his manager. But their conversation stalled at the sound of the newscast that blared loudly from Jett’s device. It was this sudden eruption that woke him. He sat up in the seat, stretching, yawning.
“What’s up?” He asked Maddie , but looked to Jett , who attempted to hide the screen of the computer.
“Sorry to wake you, Rick. Jett and I were trying to sync my laptop to her iPad to exchange some sketches she conjured for the American leg of your tour. We got side-tracked with a blog-site. Apparently, you’re dating again.”
“Dating?” Rick sat forward. He looked to the front of the jet and motioned for the flight attendant. “Who am I attached to now?”
The attendant approached holding a tumbler with ice. She fixed his drink. He watched her pour. She smiled at him and held his gaze a little too long. He smiled back. She was a pretty lady with red hair.
“Former Teen-star, Courtney Hynes.” Maddie said.
Rick looked over. “What? That’s ridiculous. She’s nuts. So I hear.”
“Indeed.” Maddie answered.
Rick took the drink from the attendant and sipped then slurped the vodka tonic. He nodded his approval to the attendant. She backed away, leaving. He watched the sway of her hips as she moved along the aisle. He wondered if there would be time later to visit with the attendant. The interest was there and he was always up for a good time. He drank again, allowing the smooth tonic to soothe his throat.
“There was something else.” He remembered now while wiping his eyes. Maddie and Jett had begun to speak again. “What was that other thing about the police and my show? Did something happen?” He saw Jett put the device away into a holder. He met her gaze, black-rimmed blue eyes. She smiled and seemed about to answer before Maddie cut him off.
“Something did happen after your show, but it’s not something I should speak to you about. Arnie.” Maddie nodded to the back of the jet. “I’m sure he’ll inform you.”
Lead formed in his stomach. He swallowed a long draught, topping off the cocktail and motioned to the attendant for another. He got up from his seat, stretched again and turned to his manager who sat waiting, with a cell phone pressed to his chest and a sour look on his face.
“Is it that bad?” Rick asked Maddie though he looked to Arnie. Arnie’s face was huge. He was a big guy. His jowls fluttered as he blew out a breath. “What, I can’t take a nap and wake up to good news for once?”, Rick asked no one as he began to make his way to the back. He fell into the seat opposite Arnie and waited for the attendant to pour another drink for him before readying himself for bad news. Something was always happening with his fans, but he usually found out after the fact. Arnie and the rest of his team tried their best to shield him from the bad so that he could focus on performing. Since retiring his mother as his manager his “luck” had been equal parts good and bad.
“Leave the bottle.” He touched the attendant’s hand. “What’s happened now?” He asked his manager. Arnie sighed, shook his head and began to explain the news Maddie and Jett had tried to conceal.
As a rule of thumb he tried not to watch the news or read the gossip pages. He didn't want to see himself in the light that others saw him. Even with this latest news of a murder of a woman who had been present at his concert, he wanted to hear nothing more than necessary. Did he personally know the victim? No. Had he met her backstage that night? Yes, along with a number of other adoring female fans. Had she come with him back to his hotel room? Yes. Had he killed her? No way. It was a ridiculous assumption.
“Was she the only one with you?” Arnie asked, summing up the series of questions that needed to be asked.
“No. Yes. I . . . I don’t know.” Rick answered while reflecting back on that night. Drunk on the finest champagne, he more than likely seduced the young miss, took her to bed in an additional suite — not the official one for him and his entourage, naturally — and fucked her into oblivion. Waking the next day, he would find her sleeping and in true rockstar form, he would step out without waking her to say goodbye. That was his standard modus operandi when picking up groupies after shows. He could only assume that’s what happened in London.
“She was found in the suite with a large amount of blood and viscera on the bed and walls and floor of the room. It was a very gruesome sight.” Arnie said.
“Am I gonna be arrested?”
“No, no. I’ve spoken to the police. Apparently there were a number of females in your room and a couple of males all from an after-party. Tony there found you the next day in your hotel room still asleep.” Arnie motioned to the left to one of Rick’s bodyguards. “Tony can vouch for you. The whole situation is crazy but you know, your fans are crazy. Poor girl.” Arnie shook his head. His phone rang. Arnie answered. Rick drained the last of his drink. Arnie handed the phone over.
"Your mother." He rose, elevated the seat to an upright position, and took the phone.
"Hello?"
"Rick, baby, is that you?"
"Ma."
"Well, hello to you too. What has it been now, almost a week since I heard from you? Won't you call and check on your poor Mama sometime?"
"You're anything but poor. I'm sorry I haven’t spoken to you. I've been very busy. Touring." He rubbed sleep from his eyes, feeling a slight annoyance at the call. He wanted to continue the discussion with Arnie and plan how to make the bad publicity go away; especially before his mother would hear about it. Poor girl, indeed. Poor me, Rick thought.
"You need to come home."
"Why?"
"Buster died. You need to be here for the funeral. Now Arnie told me you're on your way back to the States. Change your flight so you can come home."
"Buster died? How? When?"
"It was his heart. Those damn pills. I think he knew I put them in his food, so he stopped eating, would scrounge around in the garbage after dinner and eat our leftovers. I didn't find out until a couple days later; one of the cleaning girls found him out back, told Lucretia and she told me."
"Listen, I'm sorry to hear that Buster died. I'm sorry about that. He'll be missed. But I have two shows lined up as soon as I land. What with rehearsals and all I don't think I can make it—"
"You can spare some time out of your busy schedule for Buster. I won't hear no to this. I mean it. He was such a good dog and your only real friend growing up. Show a little respect and bring your butt home."
"All right, all right." He agreed with an exasperated tone, glad for the distraction from his latest troubles. “When do we bury him?”
"As soon as you get here."
"Fine, I'll switch my flight once I land in New York."
"Good. After all I've done for you, don't you dare ever say no to me, young man. All the riches you got coming your way are because of me and don't you forget it."

And you know what we mean by "fight"...

This is for those with dark desires, who wish to explore erotic excess beyond the plain vanilla of everyday life. Follow Alice through the looking glass, if you dare...

Review

I absolutely loved Wonderland, ( Review of Fifty Shades of Alice in Wonderland ), but Looking Glass Land didn't impress me quite as much.
Instead of learning how to have amazing sex, Alice learns about the many kinks people have and how she should have an open mind and not be judgmental. (foot fetish, orgasm denial, cross dressing, swingers, etc.)
While these are lessons everyone should learn, it didn't make for as interesting of a read as Wonderland. There seemed to be fewer erotic scenes, and they weren't quite as hot. The characters were not nearly as funny as Wonderland, but there were still a few references to the writing of the book and buying on Amazon.

Overall, It was an okay read. Had I not read Wonderland first I'm sure I would have enjoyed this book much more.

Excerpt

Rae looked up from the computer screen to see a man of about forty standing in the doorway. His height was slightly below the doorframe. He was tall. Wearing blue jeans and an Irish fisherman's sweater with a pale blue shirt underneath, his dark brown hair contrasted off the sweater. Sable brown eyes observed her. His smile only increased his handsome good looks.
"You look good sitting there." He boomed in a loud Scottish brogue. "I'm Rory MacGregor and welcome to MacGregor Communications Mrs. Spencer."
Rae started to get up out of her chair, but her legs felt like jelly. She finally got hold of herself, stood and met him halfway.
"It's so good to finally meet you, Mr. MacGregor."
He extended his hand and took Rae's in a firm grip.
"And it's good to meet you as well. Please call me Rory. I don't believe in old fashioned formalities in the office."
"Well then Rory, please…call me Rae."
He sauntered into the office and sat down in one of the two leather and chrome chairs strategically placed in front of the glass and chrome desk.
"Very well how about if I introduce you properly to the staff? I can give you a run down on what everyone does. I know it'll boggle your mind for a week or two but you'll learn quickly."
"That sounds good." she replied, trying not to look at him too directly.
Damn Shawn! He hadn't told her Rory MacGregor was not only a younger man he had failed to let her know how handsome a man he was. Not that she was interested. A relationship with a man was the furthest thing from Rae's mind since all the nastiness with Duncan, the divorce…his girlfriend.

No wicked wenches or wild rampages…it’s been centuries since Mordr the Berserker was turned into a Vangel-a Viking Vampire Angel-as punishment for his sin of wrath, and he’s been frustrated ever since. It’s not so bad being stuck in modern-day Las Vegas. What better place to slay Lucipires, or demon vampires, than the original Sin City. But then Mordr Sigurdsson’s mission is expanded to a new assignment: protect lust-worthy Miranda Hart.

Miranda’s well- ordered life turned into chaos when she unexpectedly inherited her late cousin’s five children. Now, her cousin’s dangerous husband is about to be paroled, and she needs a miracle to keep them all safe. That miracle arrives on her doorstep in the form of a very buff, handsome man with a very strange name. Mordr wants nothing to do with a red-haired wench or children. Miranda wants nothing to do with gorgeous hunk who claims to be a Viking.

As Miranda and Mordr give in to temptation, they must decide if they fit in each other’s worlds-before their enemies close in on them.

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE
Gage’s head was forcefully yanked back as she fisted his hair and pulled.  He growled deep in his throat and thrust his hips more forcefully into her body, making her pull even harder.  He bent his head and crushed his mouth into her soft lips, tasting and licking and sucking for all he was worth.   Fuck, she tasted like cherry candy.  At one time, when he ate food, cherry was his favorite flavor.  He hadn’t eaten in more years than he could remember, not since he was young, but he would have loved a piece of cherry candy right then.  He slammed his tongue into her mouth in rhythm with his hips, just to hear her make that sexy, deep moan that he loved so much.  And she did.  She moaned and then surprised him by catching that tongue and sucking it further.  It was his turn to moan then.
Her hands released his hair and slid down his sweat-soaked back, all the way to his ass.  She gave each cheek a strong squeeze and pulled him harder into her body.  “Soon,” she whispered in his ear, and didn’t that just send little shivers zinging all over his body.  He knew exactly what was about to happen.  He felt her tighten around him from the inside out and he could feel the tingle building in his lower back.  He hoped he could hold off just long enough to make her shout his name again.
And then, she did.  “Gage!” she shouted into the night.
“Fuck yes!” he growled as he hooked his arms under her knees, raising them up to give him all the access he could want to throw himself into her in a wild rhythm that sent them both flying.
As they lay together catching their breath, he wondered what she was thinking.  He could invade her thoughts if he wanted, but out of respect for her, he did not.  He loved the way it felt to just lay with her and he wished deep down that it would never end.  This spot in the forest had become a regular meeting place for them and he had begun to think of it as their spot.
As if on cue, she wiggled out from under him, stood quickly, and began to dress.  “I wish it didn’t have to be this way,” she said with sadness in her eyes.
“I know Princess,” he said softly.  She smiled at his endearment for her.  “But it has to be unless we can find another way.”
“I know,” she said.  “Doesn’t mean I have to like it.”
He watched as she pulled her dress over her head and pulled her long, auburn hair out and shook it.  His heart skipped a beat as she ran her fingers through it to straighten it out.  He stood and dressed himself as well, but his eyes never left her.  She was so beautiful, so strong, and yet so innocent in some ways.  Was it any wonder that he was head over heels for her?
“I have to go now,” she reminded him.  “I will see you again tomorrow?”
“Of course,” he replied.  He watched her walk away with that glide that belonged only to her.  When she was nearly out of sight, she turned and waved to him.  He waved back as he whispered, “Bye Serena.”
After she was out of sight, Gage moved his feet.  He always followed her to make sure she arrived home safely.  He kept her just in his line of sight, but he never got close enough that she could see him or sense him near.  He would never forgive himself if something happened to her after sneaking out to meet him.  He had to use his vampire speed to keep up with her on many occasions, and this was one of them.  She may not have the exceptional sight or the mental abilities that he did, but that woman was far from powerless.  She could hold her own in battle, and that was a huge turn on for him.
It was funny he thought, that when he first met her, she had been the enemy.  She and her family had been conned by the dragon, Merrick, who wanted Leigh as his own.  He managed to convince the Fey that Rebel and the rest of the Knight family had kidnapped Leigh and that she was Merrick’s mate.  Of course, that was not the case, but the Fey had a healthy respect for mates and believed him.
It was Serena who saw the truth.  She saw it in the way Leigh and Rebel had acted on that fateful night.  It was Serena who convinced her mother to side with the vampires by telling her that Leigh was pregnant with Rebel’s child.  Children are so precious to the Fey, and her mother was quick to offer aid to an unborn child.  So many things happened that night.  It was the night that Antonio died, well, the first time.  It was the night that Gage had almost died as well.  Serena had helped Jacque to fix his broken and bloody body, and for that, he owed her his life.  She had been there to rescue Leigh from Merrick and she had been there to help Antonio return from the dead, if only for a short time.  It was Serena’s magic that gave the family the extra magical push they needed.  She had been key to just about everything, from defeating Merrick to Jacque and Frankie finally becoming official mates.  Of course, Frankie was now a vampire, no thanks to Merrick.  He had left her for dead and if Jacque hadn’t changed her… Well, Gage didn’t care to think about that.
He shifted his train of thought back to the woman he was following through the enchanted forest near her home.  He moved quietly so he didn’t disturb the leaves on the ground or scare any creature that might be awake in the middle of the night.  Serena moved with an ethereal grace that was hers alone.  Her long auburn hair whipped out behind her as she ran effortlessly through the night.  Gage sighed.  He couldn’t help it.  He knew the second it escaped his lips that he was turning into a big puddle of mush where she was concerned.  She was his perfect mate, and he knew it.
It was a shame he couldn’t seem to make her mother understand that.  Anora was queen of their Fey clan.  Gage had approached her in person to ask for Serena; hell, he begged for her.  But Anora let him know in no uncertain terms that Serena was to wed some damned prince from the other side of the world, to whom she had been promised since birth.
Gage watched as Serena snuck back into her home, and once she was safe inside, he turned to leave.  Dawn would be approaching soon and he still had much to do.  He ran out of the forest and through the city streets.  When he reached the main strip, he found what he was looking for.
“Hey there cutie,” the woman said.  “You lookin’ for a date?”
“Not exactly,” Gage replied.  He gifted her with one of his gorgeous, boyish grins.  He explained to the prostitute what he needed, and she looked at him like he had grown another head.
“Whatever gets you off, I guess,” she finally said with a shrug of her shoulders.  She dug into the bag slung over one side of her body.  Gage thought it looked a little like a Mary Poppins bag and wondered if she could pull an umbrella out of it.  Hell, he thought he could probably fit himself into it if he folded his body up in the right way.  He restrained himself from laughing at the mental image his mind formed, but just barely.
“Ah here it is,” she exclaimed, pulling her hand out of the bag.  “Just hold still.”  She proceeded to thoroughly drench him in her perfume.  She started at his neck, sprayed his shirt, his hair, and anything else she could.  When he could hardly breathe for choking on the smell, Gage stopped her.
“Thank you, that will do,” he choked out.  He reached in his back pocket and pulled out his wallet.  He handed the working gal a crisp hundred dollar bill.
“Anytime, Sugar,” she grinned as she took the money.

About the Author:

I live in KY with my beautiful family which includes my children, my fiancé Greg, and two cats. When I am not writing, I enjoy the little things in life; a good book, a movie, going to a ball game, and watching my children do what kids do (usually the girls torturing my son in some creative way).
I love to both read and write paranormal books. For me, it is an escape from the real world that doesn't come from anywhere else. When my characters talk, I listen. Someday soon, I hope to devote myself to writing full time.

Can Luke conquer his past and claim the only woman he’s ever loved?

Book Description:

Magic didn’t just find Luke Caulfield. It chased him down, bludgeoned him, and has been dogging him ever since. Some lessons are harder than others. Luke survives by embracing danger and upping the ante to give it one better. An enforcer for the Coven, a large, established group of witches, his latest assignment is playing bodyguard to the daughter of Coven leaders.

Abigail Ruskin is chaperoning a spoiled twelve-year-old from New York to her parents’ home in Utah Territory when Luke gets on their stagecoach in Colorado. A powerful witch herself, Abigail senses Luke’s magic, but he’s so overwhelmingly male, she shies away from contact. Stuck between the petulant child and Luke’s raw sexual energy, Abigail can’t wait for the trip to end.

Wraiths, wolves, and humans with dark magick attack. Unpleasant truths surface about the child and Abigail’s well-ordered world crashes around her. Luke’s so attracted to Abigail, she’s almost all he can think about, but he’s leery too. In over his head, he summons enforcer backup. Will they help him save the woman he’s falling in love with, or demand her immediate execution?

Excerpt:
…It wasn’t Luke but a long, drawn-out shriek that brought Abigail thumping back to consciousness, her heart hammering triple time in her chest. Eyes wide and staring against the darkness, she warded herself just in time. Strong magic battered her. She tried to sense Luke, but that was the problem with wards. They protected by forming an impenetrable barrier and corralled her magic inside.
Whatever was pummeling her seemed to have given up. She risked chinking enough of a hole in her warding to send a tendril of magic outward because she needed information. When it came, it terrified her so badly, her heart stuttered. Dark things surrounded them: wraiths, mad wolves—those who’d been turned to serve the other side—and humans who’d sold their immortal souls for forbidden knowledge. Had the girl rallied them? How could she possibly be that powerful? Luke didn’t seem to be anywhere. Abigail hoped he’d concealed himself out of harm’s way, because the two of them couldn’t make the slightest dent in the dark horde outside. The stagecoach rocked and she realized someone was climbing onto the roof. Throat so dry she could barely breathe, she mended her warding.
The books. That’s what they want… Let them haul the miserable things out of here. She knew she should risk heaven and hell to keep such knowledge out of dark hands, but Abigail didn’t see how throwing her life away would alter the outcome. She heard voices speaking the Satanic tongue, and then dragging sounds as someone transferred the trunk to the ground. Luke shouldn’t have bothered to put it back up top, she thought grimly.
What had the Girauds been doing with such arcane tomes in the first place? She supposed there was the slightest chance they’d been protecting them from falling into the wrong hands. Yes, by all means, let’s give Coven members the benefit of the doubt. Except it was a struggle, and she didn’t know who the hell to trust anymore.
She waited until it was absolutely still outside, and a tentative scan told her the dark host she’d sensed earlier had moved on, before loosing her wards. The minute she did, she felt Luke’s energy. He pulled open one of the coach doors. “I scared up a couple of horses from a nearby farm. We need to go after those books—and the girl.”
She fought down the protest that rose to her lips, but it slid out anyway. “There aren’t enough of us.”
“Fixed that problem too.” He smiled grimly. “I can ward you if you want to stay here, but if you’re coming we need to get moving. Don’t want to let the trail get too cold.” From the smirk in his voice, she knew he was being sarcastic.
She sent her magic spiraling outward and felt the books pulsing with evil. No way that path would ever get cold. “Why couldn’t I feel them this strongly before? I know the trunk had to have been spelled, but still…”
“The trunk was spelled, and by someone with magic to burn. It’s over in those trees. I guess Carolyn’s minions were in a hurry and didn’t have a wagon.”
Abigail felt like a rube. The book trunk had already been packed and sealed when she’d picked Carolyn up in New York. She’d never even thought to examine it. “Did you see Carolyn?”
“Yup.” His upper lip curled into a sneer. “Caught a glimpse of her riding a mad wolf.”
“Do you suppose there’s some way we could separate her from Goody Osborne?” Abigail bit her lip nervously.
Luke shook his head. “Even if we could—and I don’t think it’s possible—there are too many unknowns. Her parents might have been turned. If that happened, the kid could have embraced evil before it entered her body. By the time we sorted all that out, the dark would have had one too many chances to kill us.”
Abigail winced at the unvarnished truth in his words. Any residual doubts she held about the necessity of destroying the girl melted away. “Yes,” she said through clenched teeth. “I’m coming with you.”
Luke boosted her onto one of the horses. She pulled her skirts out of the way. It was a normal saddle and this was scarcely a time for modesty. Luke vaulted onto his horse, kneeing it, and they took off up the Overland Stage Road at close to a full gallop. “We’re making too much noise,” she sent.
“Doesn’t matter. They’ll expect us to come after them.”
She clung to the horse with her legs, enjoying the feel of not having to ride sidesaddle. Luke’s horse was larger, faster, and soon pulled so far ahead she could barely see him. She kneed her horse, urging it to greater speed, but the animal shied, and then reared. Abigail struggled for balance and called magic to calm the spooked animal. Something sprang at her and knocked her to the ground. She sent killing magic to stop its heart, before realizing what it was. Panting, she crawled out from under a black and gray mad wolf with blood dribbling from its nostrils, and glanced warily about. Were there more of them?
Carolyn stepped from the shadows. It looked as if she was alone, but Abigail suspected otherwise. “What do you want?”
“Simple enough. I plan to use you to get rid of Breana Giraud—and others.” A sneer twisted the girl’s features into something unpleasant. “You think people don’t know you’re part of Coven government?”
Abigail set her mouth in a hard line. “Fine. So the other side knows about me. Question is, who are you really?”
“Don’t you recognize me?” Carolyn stepped closer and turned her face from side to side as if posing for a photographer. “I gave you my name, but I am far more than that.”
She’s arrogant. Perhaps I can use that in some way. Abigail spread her hands in a placating gesture. “Because I’m used to seeing you as Carolyn Giraud, I’m not certain who you are.” She paused for emphasis. “I’d like you to tell me.”
“Certainly.” A feral grin made the child look like something out of a nightmare. “It is always better to know who your adversary is.” Her voice became soft and silky. “I have access to magic you would kill for. You may not know it, but you’d like to work for us.” She laughed, but it sounded more like broken glass shattering against itself, than a twelve-year-old girl’s mirth. “We have real power, not that paltry tripe the Coven settles for.”
Abigail waited. When Carolyn didn’t say anything else, she said, “I’m listening…and considering your offer. Life is always better than the alternative.”
“Ha! They said you couldn’t be turned, but I told them they were wrong. I am The Promised, resurrected out of legend. Goody Osborne was but a start, and this little girl is merely a convenience.” Something like an outraged squawk followed the words, but Goody silenced Carolyn almost immediately. “What I really want is you, Abigail Ruskin.”
Shit! She couldn’t be The Promised… “You mean the Dark Messiah?” Abigail scrunched up her face and held her breath, hoping against hope she’d gotten it wrong.
“The same.” A supercilious expression etched into the girl’s features. “At least the other side has heard of me. Warms my black, black heart.”
“The books—?” Abigail hunted for a connection while she rode herd on terror that threatened to immobilize her, and clouded her judgment. If ever she needed a clear head, it was now, but her mind raced feverishly.
“They weren’t doing the girl’s parents any good moldering away in that underground chamber. I’d actually been searching for them for years.” She flashed a sly smile. “They used to be mine…”

About the Author:

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have
been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains. It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.
Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.

In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.
